The UK Graduate Route Visa, Explained for Pakistani Students

The Graduate Route is one of the strongest reasons Pakistani students continue to choose the UK over other destinations. Introduced in 2021, it allows international students who complete an eligible UK degree to remain in the country and work — or look for work — for two years after graduation, with no sponsor required and no minimum salary threshold.

Eligibility is straightforward: you need a valid Student visa at the time of application, and you must have successfully completed a UK bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD at a licensed Student sponsor. PhD graduates receive three years instead of two.

Timing matters. Your university reports your course completion to the Home Office through the CAS system, and your Graduate Route application window opens once that confirmation is submitted — you cannot apply before your final results are officially confirmed by the university, so plan your visa application for the weeks immediately following your results, not before.

One detail students often miss: the Graduate Route does not require you to have a job offer, unlike the Skilled Worker visa. This makes it genuinely useful for building UK work experience before committing to a longer-term sponsored role, which in turn strengthens your case if you later apply for the Skilled Worker visa or, eventually, Indefinite Leave to Remain.
